Orthogonal projection

Definition

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C, and let WW be a finite-dimensional subspace of VV. By the orthogonal decomposition, each v∈Vv \in V is v=w+w′v = w + w' with unique w∈Ww \in W and w′∈W⊥w' \in W^\perp. The orthogonal projection onto WW is the map PW ⁣:V→VP_W \colon V \to V, PW(v)=wP_W(v) = w.

Remarks

PWP_W is a linear projection with image WW and kernel W⊥W^\perp, and it is self-adjoint. For an orthonormal basis e1,…,eke_1, \dots, e_k of WW, PW(v)=∑i=1k⟨v,ei⟩eiP_W(v) = \sum_{i=1}^{k} \langle v, e_i \rangle e_i. For the line spanned by u≠0u \ne 0, P(v)=⟨v,u⟩⟨u,u⟩uP(v) = \frac{\langle v, u \rangle}{\langle u, u \rangle} u. PW(v)P_W(v) is the point of WW closest to vv.

Explanations

L1 human

The orthogonal projection drops a perpendicular from a vector onto a subspace. The foot of the perpendicular is the projection. In R3\R^3, projecting onto the xyxy-plane sets the zz-coordinate to zero.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
