Möbius function

Definition

The Möbius function μ\mu is an arithmetic function. For each positive integer nn, it is given by μ(n)={(−1)ω(n)if n is squarefree,0otherwise.\mu(n) = \begin{cases} (-1)^{\omega(n)} & \text{if } n \text{ is squarefree}, \\ 0 & \text{otherwise}. \end{cases} Here ω(n)\omega(n) is the number of distinct prime factors of nn. The word squarefree has the meaning of the definition of a squarefree integer.

Remarks

So μ(1)=1\mu(1) = 1, μ(p)=−1\mu(p) = -1 for each prime pp, and μ(n)=0\mu(n) = 0 when p2∣np^2 \mid n for some prime pp. For example, μ(6)=1\mu(6) = 1, μ(30)=−1\mu(30) = -1 and μ(12)=0\mu(12) = 0. The function μ\mu is multiplicative, and it is the inverse of the constant function 1 for the Dirichlet convolution.

Explanations

L1 human

The Möbius function is 00 on numbers with a repeated prime factor. On the other numbers, it is 11 for an even number of prime factors and −1-1 for an odd number. It is the sign rule of inclusion and exclusion, written as a function of nn.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
