Method of undetermined coefficients

Summary

The method of undetermined coefficients finds a particular solution of a linear equation with constant coefficients Ly=b(x)L y = b(x) when bb has a special form. The right side must be a sum of terms xkeλxx^k e^{\lambda x}, xkeλxcos⁡(ωx)x^k e^{\lambda x} \cos(\omega x) and xkeλxsin⁡(ωx)x^k e^{\lambda x} \sin(\omega x). For such a term, one tries a function of the same type, with a general polynomial of degree kk and unknown coefficients. If λ\lambda (or λ+iω\lambda + i\omega) is a root of multiplicity ss of the characteristic polynomial, one multiplies the trial function by xsx^s. Substitution into the equation gives linear equations for the unknown coefficients.

Remarks

Example: for y′′+y=xy'' + y = x, try yp=Ax+By_p = A x + B. Then Ax+B=xA x + B = x, so yp=xy_p = x. Example with resonance: for y′′+y=cos⁡xy'' + y = \cos x, the number ii is a simple root of r2+1r^2 + 1. So try yp=x(Acos⁡x+Bsin⁡x)y_p = x (A \cos x + B \sin x), which gives yp=12xsin⁡xy_p = \frac{1}{2} x \sin x. The method works because the derivatives of these functions stay in a finite-dimensional space. For other right sides, use variation of parameters.

Explanations

L1 human

Guess that the answer looks like the right side, with unknown numbers in it. Put the guess into the equation and match the coefficients. If the guess already solves the homogeneous equation, multiply it by xx.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
