Characteristic equation

Definition

Let a0,…,an−1a_0, \dots, a_{n-1} be real numbers, and consider the homogeneous linear equation with constant coefficients y(n)+an−1 y(n−1)+⋯+a1 y′+a0 y=0.y^{(n)} + a_{n-1}\, y^{(n-1)} + \dots + a_1\, y' + a_0\, y = 0. Its characteristic polynomial is p(r)=rn+an−1rn−1+⋯+a1r+a0p(r) = r^n + a_{n-1} r^{n-1} + \dots + a_1 r + a_0. Its characteristic equation is the polynomial equation p(r)=0p(r) = 0 for an unknown complex number rr.

Remarks

For each complex rr, the function y=erxy = e^{r x} satisfies y(n)+⋯+a0y=p(r) erxy^{(n)} + \dots + a_0 y = p(r)\, e^{r x}. So erxe^{rx} is a solution if and only if p(r)=0p(r) = 0. Example: the equation y′′−3y′+2y=0y'' - 3 y' + 2 y = 0 has the characteristic equation r2−3r+2=0r^2 - 3 r + 2 = 0, with roots 11 and 22. The characteristic polynomial of a linear recurrence plays the same role for recurrences, with rkr^k in place of erxe^{r x}.

Explanations

L1 human

Try a solution of the form erxe^{r x}. Each derivative multiplies it by rr, so the equation becomes p(r)erx=0p(r) e^{rx} = 0. Since erxe^{rx} is never zero, rr must be a root of pp.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
