Limit of a function of several variables
Definition
Let and let . Let be a limit point of : each open ball about contains a point of other than . Let . When this holds, tends to as tends to , with the notation . For each there is a such that for each with . Here is the Euclidean norm of Euclidean space.
Remarks
A limit is unique when it exists, because is a limit point of . The value , and even whether is in , has no effect on the limit. A function into tends to if and only if each component tends to . To show that a limit does not exist, it is enough to find two paths with different limits.
Explanations
L1 human
The definition says that you can make as close to as you want. For this, take close enough to but not equal to . In the plane, "close to " means inside a small disc about , so can come from every direction at once.
