statement theorem
Irrationality of the square root of 2
Statement
The square root of is an irrational number. That is, there are no integers and with and .
Remarks
A classical proof: suppose that in lowest terms. Then , thus is even. Then is also even, which is a contradiction. The theorem is a special case of the irrationality of the square root of a prime.
History
The ancient Greeks knew this result. Tradition attributes its discovery to the Pythagoreans.
Explanations
L1 human
No fraction squared gives exactly . Fractions such as and come close, but there is always an error. This means that the diagonal of a square with side has a length that is not a ratio of whole numbers.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
