statement theorem

Fraction in lowest terms

Statement

Let qq be a rational number. Then there is exactly one pair of integers aa and bb with b>0b > 0, gcd⁡(a,b)=1\gcd(a, b) = 1 and q=a/bq = a / b.

Remarks

The fraction a/ba / b is the irreducible fraction, or the fraction in lowest terms, of qq. To find it from any fraction c/dc / d with d≠0d \neq 0, divide cc and dd by ±gcd⁡(c,d)\pm \gcd(c, d), with the sign that makes the denominator positive. For example, −6/−4-6 / -4 has lowest terms 3/23 / 2.

Explanations

L1 human

You can simplify each fraction until the top and the bottom have no common factor larger than 11. For example, 12/1812 / 18 becomes 2/32 / 3 when you divide both numbers by 66. The result does not depend on the order of the simplification steps.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
