concept

Gram–Schmidt process

Summary

Let VV be an inner product space over R\R or C\C, and let v1,…,vk∈Vv_1, \dots, v_k \in V be linearly independent. The Gram–Schmidt process defines vectors u1,…,uku_1, \dots, u_k by u1=v1u_1 = v_1 and, for 2≤j≤k2 \le j \le k, uj=vj−∑i=1j−1⟨vj,ui⟩⟨ui,ui⟩ui.u_j = v_j - \sum_{i=1}^{j-1} \frac{\langle v_j, u_i \rangle}{\langle u_i, u_i \rangle} u_i. Then the vectors ej=uj/∥uj∥e_j = u_j / \norm{u_j} form an orthonormal family with the same span as v1,…,vjv_1, \dots, v_j for each jj.

Remarks

Each step subtracts from vjv_j its projections on the earlier vectors uiu_i. For v1=(1,1)v_1 = (1, 1) and v2=(1,0)v_2 = (1, 0) in R2\R^2, it gives u1=(1,1)u_1 = (1, 1) and u2=(1/2,−1/2)u_2 = (1/2, -1/2). In floating point arithmetic, the modified Gram–Schmidt process is more stable. In matrix form, the process gives the QR decomposition.

Explanations

L1 human

The Gram–Schmidt process turns any independent list of vectors into a list of perpendicular unit vectors. It treats the vectors one at a time, and it removes from each one its components along the earlier ones. Then it scales each result to length one.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Vector space definition
  2. Inner product definition
  3. Linear combination definition
  4. Linear subspace definition
  5. Orthogonal vectors definition
  6. Linear independence definition
  7. Linear span definition
  8. Orthonormal family definition
  9. Gram–Schmidt process concept

What depends on this

3 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
