General solution and particular solution

Summary

The general solution of an ordinary differential equation of order nn is a family of solutions that depends on nn arbitrary constants C1,…,CnC_1, \dots, C_n. In the usual case, each solution of the equation is a member of the family, with the possible exception of singular solutions. A particular solution is one solution of the equation. It is often the member of the general solution for one choice of the constants.

Remarks

The general solution of y′′+y=0y'' + y = 0 is y=C1cos⁡x+C2sin⁡xy = C_1 \cos x + C_2 \sin x. The choice C1=1C_1 = 1, C2=0C_2 = 0 gives the particular solution y=cos⁡xy = \cos x. An initial value problem fixes the constants. For an equation of order nn, one needs nn initial conditions. For a linear equation, the general solution of the inhomogeneous equation is one particular solution plus the general solution of the homogeneous equation.

Explanations

L1 human

The general solution is the list of all answers, written with free constants. A particular solution is one answer from the list. For y′=2xy' = 2x, the general solution is y=x2+Cy = x^2 + C, and y=x2+5y = x^2 + 5 is a particular solution.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
