statement proposition

g to the n equals 1 iff the order divides n

Statement

Let GG be a group with identity element ee, and let g∈Gg \in G be an element of finite order mm. Let nn be an integer. Then gn=eg^n = e if and only if mm divides nn.

Remarks

The proof divides nn by mm with remainder: n=qm+rn = qm + r with 0≤r<m0 \leq r < m, so that gn=(gm)qgr=grg^n = (g^m)^q g^r = g^r. By the minimality of mm, the power grg^r is ee only when r=0r = 0. A consequence is that ga=gbg^a = g^b if and only if a≡b(modm)a \equiv b \pmod m.

Explanations

L1 human

An element of order mm comes back to the identity exactly after mm, 2m2m, 3m3m steps, and so on. It is never at the identity after a number of steps that is not a multiple of mm. For example, a rotation by 9090 degrees is the identity after 88 steps, but not after 66 steps.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Laws of exponents in a group statement
  3. Order of an element definition
  4. g to the n equals 1 iff the order divides n statement

What depends on this

14 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
