statement proposition
A finite abelian group is cyclic iff its exponent equals its order
Statement
Let be a finite abelian group. Then is cyclic if and only if the exponent of equals .
Remarks
If is cyclic with generator , then the order of is , so the exponent is . For the converse, write with , by the classification. The exponent is and the order is , so they are equal only when . The abelian condition is necessary: has exponent and order , but it is not cyclic. For example, is cyclic if and only if .
Explanations
L1 human
In a cyclic group, one element has order equal to the size of the group. For a finite abelian group, it is enough that the exponent equals the size. Then the group is cyclic.
