Formula for the modulus

Statement

Let xx and yy be real numbers. Then the modulus of the complex number x+yix + y i is ∣x+yi∣=x2+y2.|x + y i| = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}.

Remarks

This follows from the definition of the modulus, because Re⁡(x+yi)=x\operatorname{Re}(x + y i) = x and Im⁡(x+yi)=y\operatorname{Im}(x + y i) = y for real xx and yy. The hypothesis that xx and yy are real is necessary. For example, ∣i+i⋅i∣=∣−1+i∣=2|i + i \cdot i| = |-1 + i| = \sqrt{2}, but i2+i2=−2\sqrt{i^2 + i^2} = \sqrt{-2} is not even real.

Explanations

L1 human

To find the length of a complex number, square its two real coordinates, add them, and take the square root. For 1−i1 - i, this gives 1+1=2\sqrt{1 + 1} = \sqrt{2}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
