definition

Floor function

Definition

Let xx be a real number. The floor of xx, written ⌊x⌋\lfloor x \rfloor, is the greatest integer nn with n≤xn \le x. The floor function is the function R→Z\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{Z}, x↦⌊x⌋x \mapsto \lfloor x \rfloor.

Remarks

The greatest such integer exists because the reals are Archimedean and because of the well-ordering principle. For each integer nn, ⌊n⌋=n\lfloor n \rfloor = n. For example, ⌊π⌋=3\lfloor \pi \rfloor = 3 and ⌊−0.5⌋=−1\lfloor -0.5 \rfloor = -1. The characterization of the floor gives an equivalent definition.

Explanations

L1 human

The floor of a number rounds it down to a whole number. On the number line, it is the nearest integer at the number or to its left. For negative numbers, take care: the floor of −1.2-1.2 is −2-2, not −1-1.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 17 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
