Equivalence relation

Definition

Let AA be a set. An equivalence relation on AA is a binary relation ∼\sim on AA that is reflexive, symmetric and transitive. For all a,b,c∈Aa, b, c \in A:

  1. a∼aa \sim a;
  2. a∼ba \sim b implies b∼ab \sim a;
  3. a∼ba \sim b and b∼cb \sim c imply a∼ca \sim c.

Remarks

For a fixed integer n≥1n \ge 1, congruence modulo nn on Z\mathbb{Z} is an equivalence relation: a∼ba \sim b when nn divides a−ba - b. An equivalence relation cuts the set into equivalence classes, and these form a partition. Each function gives an equivalence relation. See equivalence relation induced by a function.

Explanations

L1 human

An equivalence relation says when two objects are "the same for our purpose". Two integers are congruent modulo 22 when they have the same parity. Then all even numbers count as one kind, and all odd numbers as another.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
