Diagonal matrix
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an integer. A square matrix of order over is diagonal when for all . For , the matrix is the diagonal matrix with for each .
Remarks
The product of two diagonal matrices is diagonal: . Over a commutative ring, diagonal matrices commute with each other. The determinant of a diagonal matrix is the product of its diagonal entries. A matrix that is similar to a diagonal matrix is diagonalisable.
Explanations
L1 human
A diagonal matrix has numbers only on its main diagonal, from the top left to the bottom right. As a map, it stretches each coordinate axis by its own factor. Diagonal matrices are easy to add, multiply and raise to powers.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
