Branch cut
Definition
Let be an open set and let be a multivalued function on . A branch cut for is a closed subset of such that has a continuous single-valued branch on the open set . Usually a branch cut is a curve or a union of curves. A branch on is a continuous function on with for each . The standard branch cut for the logarithm on is the ray . The open set is the slit plane.
Remarks
A branch cut usually joins branch points. A branch point of is a point with the following property. When goes once around a small circle with center , the values of do not come back to their start. For and , the branch points are and , so a cut is a curve from to . The principal branches of the logarithm and of the square root use the slit plane. Each other ray from is also a valid branch cut and gives other branches. The slit plane is .
Explanations
L1 human
You cannot choose the logarithm continuously on a full circle around . A branch cut is a line that you remove from the plane so that no path can go around . On what is left, a continuous choice is possible. Crossing the cut makes the chosen value jump, for the logarithm by .
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
