Principal branch

Definition

Let FF be a multivalued function on a set X⊆CX \subseteq \mathbb{C}, so that F(z)F(z) is a set of complex numbers for each z∈Xz \in X. A principal branch of FF is a function ff on XX with f(z)∈F(z)f(z) \in F(z) for each z∈Xz \in X, chosen by a standard convention. Its value f(z)f(z) is the principal value of FF at zz. For the main functions of complex analysis, the conventions are these. Let z≠0z \neq 0, and let Arg⁡z∈(−π,π]\operatorname{Arg} z \in (-\pi, \pi] be the principal value of the argument.

  • The principal logarithm is Log⁡z=ln⁡∣z∣+iArg⁡z\operatorname{Log} z = \ln |z| + i \operatorname{Arg} z, where ln⁡\ln is the real natural logarithm.
  • The principal square root is z=e12Log⁡z\sqrt{z} = e^{\frac{1}{2} \operatorname{Log} z}.
  • For w∈Cw \in \mathbb{C}, the principal power is zw=ewLog⁡zz^w = e^{w \operatorname{Log} z}.

Remarks

The imaginary part of Log⁡z\operatorname{Log} z is in (−π,π](-\pi, \pi]. For example, Log⁡i=iπ/2\operatorname{Log} i = i\pi/2 and Log⁡(−1)=iπ\operatorname{Log}(-1) = i\pi. These principal branches are continuous and holomorphic on C∖(−∞,0]\mathbb{C} \setminus (-\infty, 0], see the principal logarithm is holomorphic off the branch cut. They are not continuous at the points of (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0). Some authors use Arg⁡z∈[0,2π)\operatorname{Arg} z \in [0, 2\pi) instead. This gives a different principal branch.

Explanations

L1 human

A multivalued function gives many values at a point. The principal branch is the rule that everybody agrees on for picking one value. For the logarithm, the rule is to take the angle between −180-180 and 180180 degrees.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
