Universal property of the quotient space

Statement

Let FF be a field, let VV and UU be vector spaces over FF, and let WW be a subspace of VV. Let π ⁣:V→V/W\pi \colon V \to V / W be the quotient map. Let T ⁣:V→UT \colon V \to U be a linear map with W⊆ker⁡TW \subseteq \ker T. Then there is exactly one linear map Tˉ ⁣:V/W→U\bar T \colon V / W \to U with Tˉ∘π=T\bar T \circ \pi = T. It is given by Tˉ(v+W)=T(v)\bar T(v + W) = T(v).

Remarks

The condition W⊆ker⁡TW \subseteq \ker T makes Tˉ\bar T well defined. The kernel of Tˉ\bar T is ker⁡T/W\ker T / W, and its image is im⁡T\im T. For W=ker⁡TW = \ker T, the map Tˉ\bar T is injective, which gives the first isomorphism theorem.

Explanations

L1 human

A linear map that kills every vector of WW cannot tell apart two vectors that differ by an element of WW. So it makes sense on the cosets, and it becomes a map from the quotient space. This property describes the quotient space completely.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
