Triple integral

Definition

Let B=[a1,b1]×[a2,b2]×[a3,b3]B = [a_1, b_1] \times [a_2, b_2] \times [a_3, b_3] with ai<bia_i < b_i, and let f ⁣:B→Rf \colon B \to \mathbb{R} be bounded. Partition each interval [ai,bi][a_i, b_i], and let B1,…,BNB_1, \dots, B_N be the resulting closed sub-boxes, with volumes ΔV1,…,ΔVN\Delta V_1, \dots, \Delta V_N. For points pk∈Bkp_k \in B_k, the sum S=∑k=1Nf(pk) ΔVkS = \sum_{k=1}^{N} f(p_k) \, \Delta V_k is a Riemann sum of ff. The function ff is Riemann integrable on BB if there is I∈RI \in \mathbb{R} with this property. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣S−I∣<ε|S - I| < \varepsilon for all Riemann sums whose sub-boxes have diameter less than δ\delta. Then II is the triple integral of ff over BB, written ∭Bf(x,y,z) dV\iiint_B f(x, y, z) \, dV.

Remarks

This is the case n=3n = 3 of the multiple integral over a box. The case n=2n = 2 is the double integral. For a bounded solid E⊆BE \subseteq B, the integral over EE is the integral over BB of ff times the indicator function of EE. The volume of EE is ∭E1 dV\iiint_E 1 \, dV, when this integral exists. By Fubini's theorem, for continuous ff the triple integral equals an iterated integral. For example, ∭[0,1]3xyz dV=(1/2)3=1/8\iiint_{[0,1]^3} x y z \, dV = (1/2)^3 = 1/8.

Explanations

L1 human

A triple integral adds up the values of ff over a solid, each weighted by the volume of a small piece. If ff is a density, the triple integral is the total mass of the solid.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
