Translation

Definition

Let vv be a vector of Rn\mathbb{R}^n. The translation by vv is the map Tv ⁣:Rn→Rn,Tv(p)=p+v.T_v \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n, \qquad T_v(p) = p + v.

Remarks

Each translation is a Euclidean isometry, and it is direct. For v≠0v \neq 0, it has no fixed point. Tv∘Tw=Tv+wT_v \circ T_w = T_{v + w} and Tv−1=T−vT_v^{-1} = T_{-v}. So the translations form an abelian group, isomorphic to Rn\mathbb{R}^n. In the plane, the composite of the reflections in two parallel lines is a translation. Mathlib's AffineEquiv.constVAdd is the translation by a vector in an affine space.

Explanations

L1 human

A translation slides every point by the same arrow. Shapes keep their size, their form and their direction. The translation by (2,1)(2, 1) sends the point (0,0)(0, 0) to (2,1)(2, 1) and the point (3,−1)(3, -1) to (5,0)(5, 0).

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
