The quaternions

Example

The quaternions H\mathbb{H} are the real vector space with basis 1,i,j,k1, i, j, k. Each quaternion is a+bi+cj+dka + b i + c j + d k with a,b,c,d∈Ra, b, c, d \in \mathbb{R}. The multiplication is R\mathbb{R}-bilinear, 11 is the identity, and the basis elements obey i2=j2=k2=ijk=−1.i^2 = j^2 = k^2 = i j k = -1. These rules give ij=k=−jii j = k = -j i, jk=i=−kjj k = i = -k j and ki=j=−ikk i = j = -i k. With this multiplication, H\mathbb{H} is a division ring that is not commutative.

Remarks

The conjugate of q=a+bi+cj+dkq = a + b i + c j + d k is qˉ=a−bi−cj−dk\bar{q} = a - b i - c j - d k, and qqˉ=a2+b2+c2+d2q \bar{q} = a^2 + b^2 + c^2 + d^2. So a nonzero qq has the inverse q−1=qˉ/(a2+b2+c2+d2)q^{-1} = \bar{q} / (a^2 + b^2 + c^2 + d^2). The quaternions are not a field, because ij≠jii j \neq j i.

Explanations

L1 human

The quaternions extend the complex numbers with two more square roots of −1-1, called jj and kk. You can divide by every nonzero quaternion. But the order of multiplication matters: ij=ki j = k and ji=−kj i = -k.

What this node needs for W3
  • a person confirmed each agent-written section: rule P04 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
