statement theorem

Taylor's theorem with the Lagrange remainder

Statement

Let k≥0k \ge 0 and let a≠xa \ne x be real numbers. Let JJ be the closed interval with endpoints aa and xx. Let ff be a real function with f(k)f^{(k)} continuous on JJ and f(k+1)f^{(k+1)} existing on the interior of JJ. Then there is ξ\xi strictly between aa and xx with f(x)=Pk(x)+f(k+1)(ξ)(k+1)!(x−a)k+1,f(x) = P_k(x) + \frac{f^{(k+1)}(\xi)}{(k + 1)!} (x - a)^{k+1}, where PkP_k is the Taylor polynomial of degree kk of ff at aa.

Remarks

For k=0k = 0 this is the mean value theorem. If ∣f(k+1)∣≤M|f^{(k+1)}| \le M between aa and xx, then ∣f(x)−Pk(x)∣≤M∣x−a∣k+1/(k+1)!|f(x) - P_k(x)| \le M |x - a|^{k+1} / (k + 1)!. Mathlib states it as taylor_mean_remainder_lagrange.

Explanations

L1 human

The error of the Taylor polynomial looks like the next term of the polynomial. Only the derivative is taken at an unknown point ξ\xi instead of at aa.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
