statement proposition

Sum of the roots of unity

Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer and let ζ\zeta be a primitive root of unity. Then ∑k=0n−1ζk=1+ζ+ζ2+⋯+ζn−1=0.\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \zeta^k = 1 + \zeta + \zeta^2 + \dots + \zeta^{n-1} = 0.

Remarks

Proof: ζ≠1\zeta \neq 1, so the geometric sum formula gives ζn−1ζ−1=0\frac{\zeta^n - 1}{\zeta - 1} = 0. Thus the sum of all the nnth roots of unity is 00 for n≥2n \ge 2. For n=1n = 1 the sum is 11.

Explanations

L1 human

The nnth roots of unity are the corners of a regular polygon with center 00. By symmetry, their center of mass is 00, and so their sum is 00. For n=4n = 4: 1+i+(−1)+(−i)=01 + i + (-1) + (-i) = 0.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
