statement theorem
Singular value decomposition
Statement
Let be an complex matrix. Then there are a unitary matrix of size , a unitary matrix of size , and an matrix with Here for , and are the singular values of .
Remarks
If is real, then and can be chosen real orthogonal. The columns of are eigenvectors of , and the columns of are eigenvectors of . The matrix is unique; and are not unique in general. Keeping the largest singular values gives the best approximation of of rank , for the Frobenius and operator norms.
Explanations
L1 human
Every matrix is a rotation, then a stretch along the axes, then another rotation. The stretch factors are the singular values. This decomposition is a central tool in data analysis and numerical computation.
