Separable equation
Definition
Let and be open intervals of , and let and be continuous functions. A separable equation is a first-order ordinary differential equation of the form for an unknown function of with values in .
Remarks
Method: if , write the equation as and integrate. With antiderivatives of and of , the solutions satisfy for a constant . For each zero of , the constant function is a solution. The method above does not find these solutions. Example: has the solutions with a real constant . Exponential growth and the logistic equation are separable.
Explanations
L1 human
In a separable equation, the right side is a product: one factor depends only on and the other only on . Put everything with on one side and everything with on the other side, then integrate both sides.
