Scalar multiplication of matrices

Definition

Let RR be a ring, let c∈Rc \in R, and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR. The scalar multiple cAcA is the m×nm \times n matrix with entries (cA)ij=c aij(cA)_{ij} = c\, a_{ij} for 1≤i≤m1 \le i \le m and 1≤j≤n1 \le j \le n.

Remarks

Over a field FF, matrix addition and scalar multiplication make Mm×n(F)M_{m \times n}(F) a vector space of dimension mnmn. The rules c(A+B)=cA+cBc(A + B) = cA + cB, (c+d)A=cA+dA(c + d)A = cA + dA, (cd)A=c(dA)(cd)A = c(dA) and 1A=A1A = A hold. For example, 2(1−103)=(2−206)2 \begin{pmatrix} 1 & -1 \\ 0 & 3 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -2 \\ 0 & 6 \end{pmatrix}.

Explanations

L1 human

Multiplying a matrix by a number means multiplying every entry by that number. The size of the matrix does not change. Doubling a matrix doubles every number in the table.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

2 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
