Sample variance

Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n be real random variables with sample mean Xˉn\bar{X}_n. The sample variance is the statistic Sn2=1n−1∑i=1n(Xi−Xˉn)2.S_n^2 = \frac{1}{n - 1} \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left(X_i - \bar{X}_n\right)^2. The sample standard deviation is Sn=Sn2S_n = \sqrt{S_n^2}.

Remarks

If the XiX_i are i.i.d. with variance σ2<∞\sigma^2 < \infty, then E[Sn2]=σ2E[S_n^2] = \sigma^2. So Sn2S_n^2 is an unbiased estimator of σ2\sigma^2. The divisor n−1n - 1 instead of nn is Bessel's correction. The version with divisor nn has expectation n−1nσ2\frac{n-1}{n} \sigma^2, so it has the bias −σ2/n-\sigma^2/n. The reason is that ∑i(Xi−Xˉn)2≤∑i(Xi−μ)2\sum_i (X_i - \bar{X}_n)^2 \le \sum_i (X_i - \mu)^2: the deviations from Xˉn\bar{X}_n are on average smaller than those from the true mean μ\mu. For i.i.d. N(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2) variables, (n−1)Sn2/σ2(n - 1) S_n^2 / \sigma^2 has the chi-squared distribution with n−1n - 1 degrees of freedom, and it is independent of Xˉn\bar{X}_n.

Explanations

L1 human

The sample variance is the average squared distance of the data from their mean, but with the divisor n−1n - 1. For the data 44, 77, 1010, the mean is 77, the squared deviations add up to 1818, and the sample variance is 18/2=918/2 = 9.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
