Bias of an estimator
Definition
Let be an estimator of a real parameter , with for each . Here is the expectation when is the true parameter. The bias of at is The estimator is unbiased if for each .
Remarks
For an i.i.d. sample with mean , the sample mean is an unbiased estimator of . The sample variance with divisor has bias . With divisor , it is unbiased. An unbiased estimator need not be good. The mean squared error is variance plus squared bias, and a biased estimator can have a smaller mean squared error. Unbiasedness is not preserved by nonlinear maps. For example, the sample standard deviation is a biased estimator of , even though is unbiased for .
Explanations

An estimator is unbiased if it is right on average, over many repetitions of the experiment. Bias is a systematic error: a scale that always shows kg too much has a bias of kg.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
