Row space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF with rows r1,…,rm∈Fnr_1, \dots, r_m \in F^n. The row space of AA is Row⁡(A)=span⁡(r1,…,rm)⊆Fn,\operatorname{Row}(A) = \operatorname{span}(r_1, \dots, r_m) \subseteq F^n, the linear span of the rows.

Remarks

The row space of AA is the column space of ATA^T. Elementary row operations do not change the row space, so row equivalent matrices have the same row space. The nonzero rows of a row echelon form of AA form a basis of Row⁡(A)\operatorname{Row}(A). Its dimension equals the dimension of the column space, see row rank equals column rank.

Explanations

L1 human

The row space collects all the combinations of the rows of a matrix. Row operations only mix the rows, so they keep the row space. After row reduction, the nonzero rows give a basis of it.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
