Rayleigh quotient

Definition

Let AA be a Hermitian n×nn \times n complex matrix, and let x∈Cnx \in \C^n with x≠0x \ne 0. The Rayleigh quotient of AA and xx is the real number R(A,x)=x∗Axx∗x.R(A, x) = \frac{x^* A x}{x^* x}.

Remarks

For each x≠0x \ne 0, λmin⁡≤R(A,x)≤λmax⁡\lambda_{\min} \le R(A, x) \le \lambda_{\max}, where λmin⁡\lambda_{\min} and λmax⁡\lambda_{\max} are the least and the greatest eigenvalues of AA. If xx is an eigenvector for λ\lambda, then R(A,x)=λR(A, x) = \lambda. So λmax⁡=max⁡x≠0R(A,x)\lambda_{\max} = \max_{x \ne 0} R(A, x) and λmin⁡=min⁡x≠0R(A,x)\lambda_{\min} = \min_{x \ne 0} R(A, x).

Explanations

L1 human

The Rayleigh quotient measures how much a symmetric matrix stretches a given direction, on average. Its largest value over all directions is the largest eigenvalue. This gives a way to estimate eigenvalues without solving the characteristic equation.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
