Quadratic integer

Definition

A quadratic integer is a complex number xx that satisfies an equation x2+bx+c=0x^2 + bx + c = 0 with integers bb and cc. Equivalently, x=−b±b2−4c2x = \dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4c}}{2} for some integers bb and cc.

Remarks

Each integer nn is a quadratic integer, since it is a root of x2−2nx+n2=0x^2 - 2nx + n^2 = 0. A quadratic integer that is not an integer is an algebraic number of degree 22. It lies in a quadratic field Q(D)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}) with DD a squarefree integer. The Gaussian integers are the quadratic integers in Q(i)\mathbb{Q}(i). Another example is the golden ratio 1+52\frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}, a root of x2−x−1=0x^2 - x - 1 = 0. For D≡2,3(mod4)D \equiv 2, 3 \pmod 4, the quadratic integers in Q(D)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}) form the ring Z[D]={a+bD:a,b∈Z}\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{D}] = \{ a + b\sqrt{D} : a, b \in \mathbb{Z} \}.

Explanations

L1 human

A quadratic integer is a root of a quadratic equation with integer coefficients and leading coefficient 11. Numbers such as 2\sqrt{2}, ii and 1+31 + \sqrt{3} are examples. They extend the integers in the same way that 2\sqrt{2} extends the rationals.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
