Pointwise convergence

Definition

Let SS be a set, and let fn ⁣:S→Rf_n \colon S \to \mathbb{R} for n≥1n \ge 1 and f ⁣:S→Rf \colon S \to \mathbb{R} be functions. The sequence (fn)(f_n) converges pointwise to ff on SS if lim⁡n→∞fn(x)=f(x)\lim_{n \to \infty} f_n(x) = f(x) for every x∈Sx \in S. That is, for every x∈Sx \in S and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is NN with ∣fn(x)−f(x)∣<ε|f_n(x) - f(x)| < \varepsilon for all n≥Nn \ge N.

Remarks

Here NN may depend on both ε\varepsilon and xx. The pointwise limit is unique, since limits of real sequences are unique. A pointwise limit of continuous functions need not be continuous: see the sequence xnx^n. Mathlib expresses pointwise convergence as convergence in the product topology, through tendsto_pi_nhds.

Explanations

L1 human

Pointwise convergence means that at each single point, the values fn(x)f_n(x) approach f(x)f(x). Different points may converge at very different speeds.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

44 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
