Parametrised surface
Definition
Let be a set that is the closure of an open set. A parametrised surface is a map , , of class C^1 on an open set that contains . Its image is the surface that parametrises. The parametrisation is regular at if the partial derivatives and are linearly independent, that is, .
Remarks
The graph of a function is parametrised by . Here , so this parametrisation is regular. The unit sphere is parametrised by on . It is not regular at the poles and . The cylinder of radius about the -axis is parametrised by . One surface has many parametrisations. Areas and surface integrals do not depend on the choice.
Explanations
L1 human
A parametrised surface is to a surface what a parametrised curve is to a curve, with two parameters instead of one. Think of as coordinates on a flat sheet, and of as a map that bends the sheet into space.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
