statement theorem
Order of the general linear group over a finite field
Statement
Let be a prime power, let be the finite field with elements, and let . The group of the invertible matrices over has order .
Remarks
A matrix is invertible exactly when its columns are linearly independent. There are choices for the first column. Column has choices, because it must avoid the vectors in the span of the first columns. For example, , and . Also, .
History
Évariste Galois computed the order of the general linear group over a prime field in 1832, in his last letter to Chevalier.
Explanations

To build an invertible matrix, choose its columns one after the other. Each new column must not lie in the span of the columns that you already chose. Counting the choices at each step gives the product formula.
