statement theorem

Open mapping theorem

Statement

Let D⊆CD \subseteq \mathbb{C} be a domain and let f:D→Cf : D \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on DD. Assume that ff is not constant on DD. Then ff is an open map: for each open set V⊆DV \subseteq D, the image f(V)f(V) is an open subset of C\mathbb{C}.

Remarks

The maximum modulus principle follows. If ∣f∣|f| had a local maximum at z0z_0, then ff would map a small disc around z0z_0 onto a set that contains no disc around f(z0)f(z_0). The connectedness of DD matters only to exclude functions that are constant on one part of DD. There is no real analogue: x↦x2x \mapsto x^2 maps (−1,1)(-1, 1) onto [0,1)[0, 1), which is not open in R\mathbb{R}. In contrast, z↦z2z \mapsto z^2 maps the unit disc onto the unit disc.

Explanations

L1 human

A nonconstant holomorphic function never squeezes an open set into a curve or a point. Around each point of the image, the image also contains a small disc.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
