Null space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. The null space of AA is Null⁡(A)={x∈Fn:Ax=0}.\operatorname{Null}(A) = \{x \in F^n : Ax = 0\}. It is the kernel of the linear map x↦Axx \mapsto Ax.

Remarks

The null space is a subspace of FnF^n, of dimension n−rank⁡An - \rank A, the nullity of AA. Row equivalent matrices have the same null space. The null space of (11)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is the line spanned by (1,−1)T(1, -1)^T. Each vector of the null space is orthogonal to each row of AA, for the dot product.

Explanations

L1 human

The null space of a matrix is the set of solutions of Ax=0Ax = 0. We find a basis of it by row reduction: each free variable gives one basis vector. It is the kernel of the matrix, viewed as a linear map.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
