Norm

Definition

Let K\mathbb{K} be R\R or C\C, and let VV be a vector space over K\mathbb{K}. A norm on VV is a map ∥⋅∥ ⁣:V→R\norm{\cdot} \colon V \to \R such that, for all x,y∈Vx, y \in V and a∈Ka \in \mathbb{K}:

  1. ∥x+y∥≤∥x∥+∥y∥\norm{x + y} \le \norm{x} + \norm{y}.
  2. ∥ax∥=∣a∣∥x∥\norm{ax} = \abs{a} \norm{x}.
  3. If ∥x∥=0\norm{x} = 0, then x=0x = 0.

Remarks

These conditions imply ∥x∥≥0\norm{x} \ge 0 for all xx. On Rn\R^n, the Euclidean norm x12+⋯+xn2\sqrt{x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2}, the norm ∣x1∣+⋯+∣xn∣\abs{x_1} + \cdots + \abs{x_n} and the norm max⁡i∣xi∣\max_i \abs{x_i} are norms. Each inner product gives a norm, see the induced norm. A norm defines a metric d(x,y)=∥x−y∥d(x, y) = \norm{x - y}.

Explanations

L1 human

A norm measures the length of a vector. The length of a sum is at most the sum of the lengths, and scaling a vector scales its length. Only the zero vector has length zero.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

What depends on this

13 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
