Noetherian ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring. The ring is Noetherian if the set of its ideals, ordered by inclusion, satisfies the ascending chain condition. That is, for every chain of ideals of , there is with for all .
Remarks
The ring is Noetherian if and only if every ideal of is finitely generated. Every field and every principal ideal domain is Noetherian. By Hilbert's basis theorem, is Noetherian when is. The polynomial ring in infinitely many variables over a field is not Noetherian: never stops. For a noncommutative ring, one defines left and right Noetherian rings with left and right ideals.
Explanations
L1 human
In a Noetherian ring, each ideal is generated by a finite list of elements. This makes many arguments work by induction, because a growing chain of ideals must stop. Rings met in practice, like , are Noetherian.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
