Nilpotent element

Definition

Let RR be a ring. An element x∈Rx \in R is nilpotent if there is a positive integer nn such that xn=0x^n = 0.

Remarks

In Z/8Z\mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}, the class of 22 is nilpotent, because 23=8=02^3 = 8 = 0. The matrix (0100)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is nilpotent: its square is the zero matrix. In a nonzero ring, a nilpotent element is a zero divisor: if nn is the least integer with xn=0x^n = 0, then x⋅xn−1=0x \cdot x^{n-1} = 0 and xn−1≠0x^{n-1} \neq 0. An integral domain has no nilpotent element except 00.

Explanations

L1 human

A nilpotent element is not zero, but some power of it is zero. Numbers do not behave like this. In the integers modulo 88, the element 22 does: 2⋅2⋅2=82 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 = 8, and 88 is 00 modulo 88.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
