Linear form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. A linear form on VV is a linear map f ⁣:V→Ff \colon V \to F, where FF is a vector space over itself. Thus f(u+v)=f(u)+f(v)f(u + v) = f(u) + f(v) and f(av)=af(v)f(av) = a f(v) for all u,v∈Vu, v \in V and a∈Fa \in F.

Remarks

A linear form is also called a linear functional or a covector. On FnF^n, each linear form is x↦c1x1+⋯+cnxnx \mapsto c_1 x_1 + \cdots + c_n x_n for unique scalars c1,…,cnc_1, \dots, c_n. The trace is a linear form on the space of n×nn \times n matrices. The linear forms on VV form the dual space of VV.

Explanations

L1 human

A linear form takes a vector and returns one number, in a linear way. On the plane, the map (x,y)↦2x−3y(x, y) \mapsto 2x - 3y is a linear form. Its kernel is the line 2x=3y2x = 3y, unless the form is zero.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

9 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
