Linear congruence

Summary

A linear congruence is a congruence ax≡b(modn)a x \equiv b \pmod n, with given integers aa and bb and a positive integer nn. Its solutions are the integers xx that satisfy it. Let d=gcd⁡(a,n)d = \gcd(a, n). The congruence has a solution if and only if d∣bd \mid b. In this case, the solutions form exactly dd residue classes modulo nn, and one residue class modulo n/dn / d.

Remarks

When gcd⁡(a,n)=1\gcd(a, n) = 1, the unique solution modulo nn is x≡a−1b(modn)x \equiv a^{-1} b \pmod n, where a−1a^{-1} is the modular multiplicative inverse of aa. The congruence ax≡b(modn)a x \equiv b \pmod n is the same as the linear Diophantine equation ax−ny=ba x - n y = b. For example, 6x≡4(mod10)6 x \equiv 4 \pmod{10} has d=2d = 2. Its solutions are x≡4(mod5)x \equiv 4 \pmod 5, that is, x≡4x \equiv 4 or x≡9(mod10)x \equiv 9 \pmod{10}.

Explanations

L1 human

A linear congruence is a linear equation in modular arithmetic. To solve 2x≡3(mod5)2 x \equiv 3 \pmod 5, find the inverse 33 of 22 modulo 55, and multiply: x≡9≡4(mod5)x \equiv 9 \equiv 4 \pmod 5. Check: 2⋅4=8≡3(mod5)2 \cdot 4 = 8 \equiv 3 \pmod 5.
