statement proposition

Limit of a quotient of sequences

Statement

Let (an)(a_n) and (bn)(b_n) be real sequences, and let aa and bb be real numbers with b≠0b \ne 0. Assume that an→aa_n \to a and bn→bb_n \to b as n→∞n \to \infty. Then there is a natural number NN such that bn≠0b_n \ne 0 for all n≥Nn \ge N. Moreover, the sequence (an/bn)n≥N(a_n / b_n)_{n \ge N} converges to a/ba / b.

Remarks

The main step is 1/bn→1/b1/b_n \to 1/b. For large nn we have ∣bn∣>∣b∣/2|b_n| > |b|/2, and then ∣1/bn−1/b∣=∣b−bn∣/(∣bn∣ ∣b∣)<2∣bn−b∣/∣b∣2|1/b_n - 1/b| = |b - b_n| / (|b_n|\,|b|) < 2 |b_n - b| / |b|^2. The limit of a product of (an)(a_n) and (1/bn)(1/b_n) then gives the result. The hypothesis b≠0b \ne 0 is needed. For an=1a_n = 1 and bn=1/nb_n = 1/n, the quotient is nn, which has no real limit.

Explanations

L1 human

The limit of a quotient is the quotient of the limits, when the limit of the denominator is not zero. For example, (3+1/n)/(2+1/n)→3/2(3 + 1/n)/(2 + 1/n) \to 3/2.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
