Laplacian

Definition

Let U⊆RnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, and let f ⁣:U→Rf \colon U \to \mathbb{R} be twice differentiable on UU. The Laplacian of ff is the function Δf ⁣:U→R\Delta f \colon U \to \mathbb{R}, Δf=div⁡(∇f)=∇⋅∇f,\Delta f = \operatorname{div}(\nabla f) = \nabla \cdot \nabla f, the divergence of the gradient of ff. It is also written ∇2f\nabla^2 f.

Remarks

In Cartesian coordinates, Δf\Delta f is the sum of the unmixed second partial derivatives of ff. The operator Δ\Delta is linear, and it maps functions of class C^k to functions of class Ck−2C^{k-2} for k≥2k \ge 2. Let ff be of class C2C^2, and let fˉr\bar{f}_r be the average of ff on the sphere of radius rr about xx. Then Δf(x)\Delta f(x) is 2n2n times the limit of (fˉr−f(x))/r2(\bar{f}_r - f(x)) / r^2 as r→0r \to 0. So Δf(x)>0\Delta f(x) > 0 means that f(x)f(x) is below its nearby averages. The Laplacian appears in the heat equation ∂tu=Δu\partial_t u = \Delta u, the wave equation and Laplace's equation Δu=0\Delta u = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The Laplacian compares the value of a function at a point with its values nearby. If ff at the point is lower than the average around it, the Laplacian is positive. If it is higher, the Laplacian is negative.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 19 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
