Iterated integral

Definition

Let R=[a,b]×[c,d]R = [a, b] \times [c, d] and let f ⁣:R→Rf \colon R \to \mathbb{R}. Suppose that, for each x∈[a,b]x \in [a, b], the function y↦f(x,y)y \mapsto f(x, y) is integrable on [c,d][c, d], and that F(x)=∫cdf(x,y) dyF(x) = \int_c^d f(x, y) \, dy is integrable on [a,b][a, b]. Then the iterated integral of ff, first in yy and then in xx, is ∫ab∫cdf(x,y) dy dx=∫ab(∫cdf(x,y) dy)dx=∫abF(x) dx.\int_a^b \int_c^d f(x, y) \, dy \, dx = \int_a^b \left( \int_c^d f(x, y) \, dy \right) dx = \int_a^b F(x) \, dx. The iterated integral in the other order, ∫cd∫abf(x,y) dx dy\int_c^d \int_a^b f(x, y) \, dx \, dy, is defined in the same way.

Remarks

Iterated integrals in three or more variables are defined by repeating this step. The inner bounds may depend on the outer variable, as in ∫01∫0xf(x,y) dy dx\int_0^1 \int_0^x f(x, y) \, dy \, dx. This integrates over the triangle 0≤y≤x≤10 \le y \le x \le 1. An iterated integral is different in principle from the double integral, but Fubini's theorem says that they are equal under suitable hypotheses. The two orders of integration can give different values when the hypotheses fail.

Explanations

L1 human

To compute an iterated integral, work from the inside out. First integrate in yy as if xx were a constant; the result is a function of xx only. Then integrate this function in xx.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Euclidean space object
  2. Function concept
  3. Function of several variables concept
  4. Iterated integral definition

What depends on this

15 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
