statement theorem

Intercept theorem

Statement

Let SS be a point of the Euclidean plane, and let ℓ1\ell_1 and ℓ2\ell_2 be two distinct lines through SS. Let AA and BB be points of ℓ1\ell_1, and let CC and DD be points of ℓ2\ell_2, all different from SS. Let ∣XY∣|XY| denote the distance between the points XX and YY. Assume that the line ACAC is parallel to the line BDBD. Then ∣SA∣∣SB∣=∣SC∣∣SD∣=∣AC∣∣BD∣.\frac{|SA|}{|SB|} = \frac{|SC|}{|SD|} = \frac{|AC|}{|BD|}.

Remarks

If also A≠BA \neq B and AA and BB are on the same ray from SS, then the theorem also gives ∣SA∣∣AB∣=∣SC∣∣CD∣\frac{|SA|}{|AB|} = \frac{|SC|}{|CD|}. A converse holds for two rays from SS: if A,BA, B are on one ray, C,DC, D on the other, and ∣SA∣∣AB∣=∣SC∣∣CD∣\frac{|SA|}{|AB|} = \frac{|SC|}{|CD|}, then ACAC is parallel to BDBD. The theorem says that the triangles SACSAC and SBDSBD are similar. The homothety with the centre SS that sends AA to BB also sends CC to DD.

History

Tradition attributes the theorem to Thales of Miletus. He may have used it to find the heights of the pyramids of Egypt.

Explanations

L1 human

Draw two lines from one point, and cut them with two parallel lines. The parallel lines cut both lines in the same proportions. This is how you can find the height of a tree from the length of its shadow and the shadow of a stick.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Euclidean distance concept
  2. Line concept
  3. Intercept theorem statement
