Idempotent matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let PP be an n×nn \times n square matrix over RR. The matrix PP is idempotent when P2=PP^2 = P.

Remarks

The matrices 00, InI_n and (1000)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} are idempotent. Over a field, an idempotent matrix is the matrix of a projection onto its image along its kernel. If PP is idempotent, then so is I−PI - P. Over a field, the eigenvalues of an idempotent matrix are in {0,1}\{0, 1\}, and its rank equals its trace in characteristic 00.

Explanations

L1 human

An idempotent matrix does nothing new when we apply it twice. A projection onto a line is the main example: once a point is on the line, projecting again keeps it there. So P2=PP^2 = P.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
