Hessian matrix
Definition
Let be open, let , and let be a point at which all second partial derivatives of exist. The Hessian matrix of at is the matrix whose entry in row and column is at . It is also written or .
Remarks
If the second partial derivatives of are continuous near , then is a symmetric matrix, by Schwarz's theorem. For , the Hessian matrix at each point is . The Hessian matrix is the Jacobian matrix of the gradient map , when this map is differentiable. At a critical point, the signs of the eigenvalues of decide the second derivative test.
Explanations
L1 human
The gradient tells how a function tilts; the Hessian tells how it bends. For a bowl like the Hessian is , and both directions bend upward. For a saddle like one direction bends up and the other bends down.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
