Handshaking lemma

Statement

Let GG be a finite graph with vertex set VV and edge set EE. Then ∑v∈Vdeg⁡(v)=2 ∣E∣.\sum_{v \in V} \deg(v) = 2\, |E|.

Remarks

Proof: count the pairs (v,e)(v, e) with v∈ev \in e. Each edge has two ends, and each vertex vv lies in deg⁡(v)\deg(v) edges. This is double counting. A direct consequence is that the number of odd-degree vertices is even. For a 33-regular graph on nn vertices, it gives 3n=2∣E∣3n = 2 |E|, so nn is even.

Explanations

L1 human

At a party, add up the number of hands each person shakes. Each handshake is counted twice, once for each of the two people, so the total is twice the number of handshakes.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Edge set definition
  3. Neighbourhood definition
  4. Degree of a vertex definition
  5. Handshaking lemma statement

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
