Glide reflection

Definition

Let H={ x∈Rn:x⋅a=c }H = \{\, x \in \mathbb{R}^n : x \cdot a = c \,\} be a hyperplane, with a≠0a \neq 0, and let σH\sigma_H be the reflection in HH. Let w∈Rnw \in \mathbb{R}^n be a nonzero vector with w⋅a=0w \cdot a = 0, and let TwT_w be the translation by ww. The glide reflection with the axis HH and the glide vector ww is the map Tw∘σHT_w \circ \sigma_H.

Remarks

Because ww is parallel to HH, the two maps commute: Tw∘σH=σH∘TwT_w \circ \sigma_H = \sigma_H \circ T_w. A glide reflection is an indirect isometry with no fixed point. Its square is the translation by 2w2w. If the translation vector is perpendicular to HH in place of parallel, then Tw∘σHT_w \circ \sigma_H is the reflection in a hyperplane parallel to HH. In the plane, the axis is the glide line. Glide reflections are symmetries of many frieze and wallpaper patterns.

Explanations

L1 human

First reflect the plane in a line, then slide it along that line. Neither step alone gives the result. The map (x,y)↦(x+1,−y)(x, y) \mapsto (x + 1, -y) is the glide reflection with the axis y=0y = 0 and the glide vector (1,0)(1, 0).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
