Free group
Definition
Let be a set. The free group on is the set of reduced words on . The product of two reduced words is their concatenation, followed by reduction. A group is free when it is isomorphic to for some set .
Remarks
The identity of is the empty word, and the inverse of is . The set is a basis of . Also if and only if and have the same cardinality, which is the rank. The free group of rank is the infinite cyclic group, and for the centre of is trivial. A nontrivial finite group is never free, because each element of a basis has infinite order.
Explanations

A free group has generators but no relations that you do not need. Two words give the same element only when the group axioms force it, as in . Each group is a quotient of a free group, so free groups are the starting point for presentations.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
